In the grand center is the figure of the Sovereign King, whose body is both literally and figuratively constituted by the blurring-together individual bodies of the citizenry, the co- signers of the social contract, who face away from the viewer and towards the Sovereign. This iconic image offers multiple representations that provide the viewer with access to many of the core themes of the Leviathan: At the bottom are juxtaposed competing, or perhaps balancing, sources of Sovereign Authority-images of Ecclesiastical Authority (on the right) and Human/Temporal Authority (on the left). For years Ned kept the Morgan, stuck in a sand bar, within view of his estate. To his credit, Ned is responsible for saving the Charles Morgan, the last surviving whaling ship, which is now displayed at Mystic Seaport in Mystic CT. He delighted in using his wealth to cause stress, as when he would ship priceless stones via standard post in beat-up cardboard boxes, then demand that the Post Office track his priceless package IMMEDIATELY even though it was still in transit, causing wild scenes of panic and anxiety within the post office. Once Hetty was gone, Ned resolved to spend her money and did so, accumulating (among other things) astonishing collections of valuable stamps and jewels. Green's son Ned had a leg amputated when he was young when Hetty refused to take him to a doctor (at that point her wealth was already considerable), instead dragging him to free clinics who were unable to effect a cure. ![]() A vivid account of Green and her family can be found in Arthur Lewis' The Day They Shook The Plum Tree. ![]() ![]() ![]() I think the most interesting chapter of all is the one about Halo Wars, a game that neither Bungie nor developer Ensemble Studios wanted made. For Dragon Age, it was dealing with its horrific game engine, for Uncharted, it was management squabbles, for Shovel Knight, it was overpromising features on Kickstarter. ![]() Smaller games are stories of individuals or small teams forsaking nearly everything else in their lives, risking everything to make it work, and even once they succeed, the toll the process has taken is clear, and many are so shell-shocked they can barely even comprehend their own success.Įach chapter deals with a different aspect of what can go wrong during production. Bungie craved independence from Microsoft until they got it, and then they realized they were in over their heads when they had to make Destiny a reality and nothing was going as planned. Uncharted 4 looks so great because a massive team put in 100 hour work weeks until everything was as perfect as it could be, even as the core leadership was sparring for most of development. It’s brutal, but necessary to read, as too often it seems like fans (and journalists) don’t truly understand everything that goes into making a game. ![]() ![]() ![]() 'Michelle Rial creates dazzling and insightful infographics.peppered with clever insights and coy observations' -Vulture Her delightful visuals dissect modern anxieties with real-life objects.' -WIRED 'Michelle Rial's illustrated book explores life's big questions (Am I eating too much cheese? ![]() ![]() I enjoyed Laura’s discovery of her desires, her journey to acceptance, and all the angst and yearning and longing… Carmilla & Laura is a rather short listen, which readers of dark fantasy and lovers of lesbian vampires should enjoy. Her Carmilla is charming and seductive, Laura couldn’t have resisted even if she had wanted to. ![]() Attraction blossoms into a temptation Laura fears to name, a tantalizing passion burning brighter than the fires of hell. ![]() While I would have loved it even more if Simper had drawn further away from the original, added more of her own imagination, she created a delightfully eerie atmosphere, which Lois Ridge carries seamlessly into her narration. With charm unparalleled and habits as mysterious as her history, Carmilla's allure is undeniable, drawing Laura closer with every affectionate touch and word. The tone is different too, Le Fanu’s novella a cautionary tale, Simper’s a celebration. ![]() Simper’s version is pretty close to the original, with two main exceptions: the relationship between Carmilla and Laura is explicitly physical and Simper’s ending goes further than Le Fanu’s. The attraction between them grows every day, undeterred by the plague that seems to be killing young women around them. Carmilla is beautiful and full of wit, despite the strange disease she suffers from. When a carriage accident brings a young woman to the schloss, Laura is immediately entranced by her new companion. In her isolated castle, Laura isn’t unhappy, but she’s lonely. A sexier, faster-paced retelling of CarmillaĬarmilla & Laura is a sexier, faster-paced retelling of Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu. ![]() ![]() Just seventeen, they are learning to navigate the multiple worlds they must live in to keep themselves and their growing love safe. ![]() While Max, after years of hopelessness, feels himself come alive at Tristan's touch, he tries desperately to forge a path forward that centers his identity and allows him to fully express his feelings for Tristan. Tristan and Max are a pair of Asian-American high school students who find themselves unexpectedly in love in post-Columbine America. ![]() I let my eyes close as he devours my mouth. He takes the opening and pushes his tongue into my mouth. When I feel his hands go to my ass, I gasp. I dig my fingers into his shirt as he continues to go at my mouth. For a moment I’m still not sure what just happened. His mouth hits mine, cutting off my words. So much for cutting through the bullshit. “You can’t say shit like that to me.” He runs a hand through his hair like I’ve made him uncomfortable. You’re ginormous and look like a male sex god.” What can it hurt? You won’t even notice I’m around.” I know it will make you both feel better knowing you’re safe.
